In April of 2002, Elsie felt she could better serve the community through the creation of her own comprehensive Communications, Marketing, Media, and Logistics firm, The Mendez Group. Her firm was the publisher of the fastest growing bi-weekly newspaper in the Gulf South, Vocero News.
In 2005, Mendez, an only child, suffered the loss of her mother to cancer and shortly thereafter lost her home and businesses as a casualty of Hurricane Katrina.
